Game Review: Dead Trigger 2

Dead Trigger is one of my favorite iOS franchises. Even though it has been in my Pocket since I first owned an iPhone 3,  I have never taken the time to review a game in the franchise. When the first game came out, I spent hours leveling my character so that I could smoke a couple of zombies with the crossbow and golden gun. Dead Trigger had everything you wanted: waves of endless zombies, creative weapons, and an engaging storyline. Dead Trigger 2 has been out for some time now and it takes the mold made by Dead Trigger and creates a more engaging story and improves upon its own gameplay mechanics.

If you are a fan of Zombie FPS games (Left For Dead, Dead Island, etc.), Dead Trigger 2 is a mobile Must-Have. Dead Trigger 2 is one of the few games that has withstood the test of time in the App Store and is an engaging FPS zombie killing experience. The premise of the game is simple: zombies have destroyed the world and you are on a small team of resistance fighters who are trying to find the cure. As you race to discover where the virus came from, you journey across 9 distinct zones (each with different zombies and battlegrounds). You earn cash by completing missions and quests, which you then spend on technology upgrades, new weapons, and wonderful power-ups (like explosive chickens). Unlike most F2P games, the mechanics and timers in the game only slow your accumulation of wealth, not your ability to play.

What keeps me coming back to Dead Trigger 2 is the variety of mission types all in this one container. Most zombie killing games are just that: focused on the merciless killing of Zombies. Dead Trigger 2 is engaging because you have more mission types: Assault, Defend, Power, Scavenge, Sentinel, and Escort. With each mission type, you get to explore this new, zombie infested, world in a new way. Lately, I have been playing Assault and Defend missions where you either kill a certain number of the zombies, or defend an area for a set amount of time. With Power and Scavenge, you must locate resources and bring them back to another location. In the final set, Sentinel and Escort, you protect a person or base from being attacked. On top of these mission types, you have the arena (wave based combat), city warfare zones (where you must kill millions of undead with the help of the online community), and of course the main quest.

Couple the storyline, variety of gameplay, unobtrusive F2P, and solid controls, and you create a game that will appeal to the masses. Dead Trigger 2 is one of my favorite games on the iPad and (hopefully) the Dead Trigger franchise will continue to grow.
