Game of the Week: First Strike

icon175x175Platform: iOS     Cost: $3.99

Another game on the long list of iOS titles. It never ceases to amaze me how rapidly innovative games are added to the iOS app store. It is mind-blowing to think of the sheer number of people who help fuel all of our gaming habits on this single platform. That being said, an app has been out for a few weeks that I would love to play more – except work tends to get in the way. First Strike is an Apocalyptic strategy game where you control a single nuclear power in an arms race (and eventual war). During gameplay, you must balance expansion, research, and survival. A great addition to the iPad for any strategy buff, and some great ties to curricular content.

The Video

Here it is, my app review. It has taken a couple of tries to get the formatting and video quality up to where I want it, and there is a ways to go before I will be totally happy. Thanks for tuning in, and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Overall

This is a great app to explore the effect that nuclear weapons have on diplomacy. By playing the app, it is clear that certain countries must maintain their weapon status simply to stay alive. I recommend this app for Social Studies teachers who are discussing anything about the Cold War or reasons for an arms race. It is also great fun to play!
