About the Course

Many schools, districts, and businesses are making the change from traditional email systems (like Outlook) to Google Apps Suite or Google Apps for Education (GAFE). Once installed, GAFE is much more than a simple email solution and can act as a collaboration platform. As a free resource, GAFE provides resources and materials to educators that allows them to create collaborative classrooms and teams. Teachers can use GAFE to go paperless, to collaborate with schools around the world, and to get their students creating real world portfolios and projects.

This course was designed by a group of Google Apps Trainer candidates at the Korea International School Jeju Campus (KiS-Jeju). We are a GAFE School. In order to help support our teachers and administrators, and continue to grow our team, we created a blended online and in-person training for our teachers. On top of being a GAFE School, we are also an Apple School. Our instructors, and our students all have access to, and use, iTunes for Coursework. This course is intended to provide training and materials in Google Apps for Education for all Teachers and Administrators. That being said, this GAFE Course can be used at other schools to provide a resource for how to master each area of GAFE and help train teachers to become Google Qualified.

In order for our educators to be able to take the course, we wanted to ensure that the training times took less than 2hrs per week (during the school year) and were focused on providing usable skills. The course is divided into four distinct sessions. Teachers are encouraged to take all four sessions in the order they are presented, but this will also be a resource for those that want to prepare for a single examination. Each session of this course will cover different Google Applications and will detail setup, administration, and classroom use. The four sessions are detailed below:

  • Session 1: Introduction to GAFE and GMail – teachers will learn the in’s and out’s of both Google Mail, Tasks, and Labs. This includes, how to set them up from an administrative perspective, and how to extend their use into the classroom. We will specifically discuss how you can use more productively as an educator and in a classroom. At the conclusion of this session, participants will use Google Labs to extend the usefulness of Google Mail in the classroom. This session is composed of 4 weeks of instruction involving 1-2 hours per week – since this course is entirely taken online, you can complete the required sections in 4-8 hours of work. The fifth lesson in this session provides tools and resources specific to the Google Mail examination. Each participant is encouraged to register for the Google Qualification exam in advance.

  • Session 2: Google Drive and Sites – most importantly, teachers will learn how to create a Google Site and how they can use that, with the paperless classroom concept of Google Drive  to display dynamic pages and documents for students. As with most of the Google Training Sessions, successfully demonstrating the use of Google Sites and creating an active site will demonstrate completion. This session is composed of 4 weeks of instruction involving 1-2 hours per week which can then be taken in . The concluding session will provide tools and resources to complete the Qualification Exams for Drive and Sites.

  • Session 3: Sites, Calendars, and Chrome – each member of the GAFE course will examine how to use Google sites in conjunction with all other Google Services to create integrated classroom management platforms. All participants will be required to create a site for classroom use and share it with the teacher. This session is composed of 4 weeks of instruction involving 1-2 hours per week which can then be taken in . The concluding session will provide tools and resources to complete the Qualification Exams for Chrome and Calendars.

  • Session 4: Google Tools and Google Administration – each participant will examine how to create and manage users within the Google Apps admin portal, add applications, setup utilities, and integrate new and existing applications. Most trainees will not have an opportunity to examine the administrative portal outside of this training. For the training, all members of the KiS community will be given limited administrative access in order to find, access, and manipulate the Google Apps Administration Dashboard. Each participant will select and use a Google Tool, not in the core suite, to use in their classroom and report on the following week. This session is composed of 4 weeks of instruction involving 1-2 hours per week. Final instruction will provide resources and materials for the Qualification Exams.

At the end of the course, trainers will be available to guide participants through the Google Qualification exams and help participants receive their Qualified Individual Status. Trainers will always be available to watch your lessons and guide you through the process of integrating Google into your classroom.
